  • "Manyosyu" - collection of ten thousand leaves - is the oldest (c. 759) and most revered anthology of Japan's poetic compilations. Over a period of four centuries 4,516 poems were written by every class of person ranging from emperors to merchants and farmers. "Manyo" is an abbreviation of  "Manyosyu" and its meaning indicates people of all ranks.

Flowers are especially relevant in Japanese culture and about 1,500 poems in "Manyosyu" are about flowers. Sailor has therefore chosen to base the colors based of their new Manyo ink bottles on flowers mentioned in "Manyosyu" poems.

The ink bottle contains 50 ml ink.

  • This Fude de Mannen fountain pen by sailor was originally made for calligraphy, but also became popular for other purposes such as skechting and journalling. Due to its angled nib (55º) the thickness of the line varies as you move the pen around. Holding the pen up at a higher angle will result in a thin line on paper, and lowering the angle will create thicker lines.

The pen comes with two Sailor inkt cartridges, but is also compatible with a sailor converter and ink bottles, which are available in our webshop.

  • Sailor is pleased to announce the first Limited Edition Fountain Pen models in the ‘Wabi Sabi’ series.
The Urushi artist, Wayo Shimamori has developed the ‘Irogasane Sabinuri’ technique to create the 88 pieces of each color worldwide.

This writing instrument is inspired by special spiritual concepts from ancient Japan.
‘Wabi’ is the feeling in the heart of calmness, of quiet, and of simple appearance.
‘Sabi’ is the visual beauty of things humble, unconventional, and unrefined. The beauty of Ageing and the continuous cycle of Life.
‘Wabi Sabi’ combines the spirit and concepts of both these values.

What makes the Wabi Sabi pens extraordinary is the special attention to detail in the process of crafting the writing instruments by hand. At first, a Urushi undercoat is applied. When the layer has dried, its suface is polished until smooth and thereafter the Sabi layer is applied. This is polished and applied again to create the illusion of roughness. Lastly, several more layers of Urushi are applied and polished for color and a metallic look.

The pen comes in a beautiful wooden box with converter, ink cartridges, duster and certificate. The pen has a large 21kt gold nib, available in sizes Medium or Broad.

Only 88 pieces of each color in the Wabi Sabi range are made worldwide.
